Alberta and Saskatchewan: Comparing Curriculum

The structure between the Saskatchewan and Alberta curriculum have very different a layout and structure. In the ELA 10-30 curriculum, the first noticeable difference is the table of contents. In the Saskatchewan curriculum, the table of contents is at the very beginning, while Alberta’s is not present. When it comes to CCCs, Alberta does not necessarily state what they are. While looking for their CCCs, you will need to know what to look for as ‘Cross-Curricular Competencies’ is not stated as a title (as well as not stated in general). But Saskatchewan’s curriculum states CCCs as a subtitle; making navigating the document much easier. Something interesting about the Alberta curriculum is that the aims for ELA 10-30 are in the first sentence. Whereas Saskatchewan provides a background before the aims of ELA 10-30. As for the goals of the subject, Saskatchewan provides the goal for k-12 which are all the same, but each grade progressing in depth. Although Alberta does provide for ELA 10-30 (in the document). The Alberta curriculum gives more specific information about ELA than that of the Saskatchewan curriculum. I personally prefer the Saskatchewan curriculum as it is much easier to navigate. As well as it seems to be much more organized than that of the Alberta curriculum document.
